Three Server Boosts. You don't need to reach any particular Boost Level to do it.
Available boosts, not total boosts
Admins with six boosts still hit a dead button here, and it never explains itself.
Boosts exist in two states. Allocated boosts are spent on your server's Boost Level, whether that's Level 1, 2 or 3. Available boosts are sitting unspent.
Server Tags need 3 available boosts. Boosts already committed to your level don't count and can't be spent twice. At Level 1 with two boosts allocated and one spare, you have one boost to work with, not three.
The fix is to reallocate. The Server Boosts tab lets you move boosts between levels and perks freely, so you can drop your level allocation, free up three, and spend them on the tag. You lose the level perks you were paying for, so it's a real trade.
Additional Perks vs Boost Levels
Server Tags belong to a newer category called Additional Perks, which sits outside the old level ladder.
There are two:
| Perk | Cost | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Server Tags | 3 boosts | 4-character tag and badge members wear on their profiles |
| Enhanced Role Styles | 3 boosts | Gradient and holographic role colours |
Want both? That's 6 boosts. They're bought separately and there's no bundle.
This system supplements Boost Levels rather than replacing them. Every level perk you already know, including emoji slots, upload limits and audio quality, works exactly as before. Additional Perks give you a way to buy one specific thing without grinding to Level 3.
Enabling it, step by step
Desktop only. The mobile app can't purchase or configure Additional Perks at all.
- Open the server and click Server Boosts in the upper-left. Only owners and admins can see this tab.
- Check the panel on the right for how many boosts are available.
- Hover the Server Tag perk and hit Enable Perk.
- Set the tag text, pick a badge, pick a colour.
You can edit any of the three later in Server Settings, under Server Tag.
Before you pick, a few constraints are worth knowing. The tag runs to 4 characters, alphanumeric plus certain special characters, with no spaces or emoji. Each server gets one tag, which you edit rather than replace. Tags aren't unique globally, so another server may already be using your text, and that's allowed. The colour is set server-wide by you and members can't change it. And you can't restrict who wears it, because there's currently no role gate on it.
Badge packs cost extra
The base perk includes a set of badges. Each additional pack is a separate purchase on top of the 3 boosts, and you have to own Server Tags first.
| Pack | Cost |
|---|---|
| Creepy Crawlies | 2 boosts |
| Pet | 3 boosts |
| Plant | 3 boosts |
| Flex | 5 boosts |
You can own several packs, but only one badge can be applied to your tag at a time. Buying all four gives you more to choose from; the tag still shows one badge.
The boosts have to stay allocated
Perks need ongoing boost allocation, and this is the expensive thing to misunderstand.
If your server drops below 3 boosts, because a booster cancels or a Nitro subscription lapses, the perk switches off. The tag is removed from every member's profile automatically and nobody gets a warning. Get the boosts back and you can re-enable it, but your members will each have to apply the tag again by hand.
Boosts are a monthly subscription, so budget this as a recurring cost. Three boosts that expire next month buy you a tag that lasts one month.
Editing a live tag removes it from everyone
When you edit a tag that's already in use, everyone wearing it has to go into their settings and select it again. Discord doesn't carry them over.
A casual rebrand therefore strips the tag off your entire server until each person notices and re-applies it. If you're going to change it, change it once and announce it.
Discord also rate limits how often a tag can be edited and doesn't publish the window, so don't plan on iterating quickly.
Quick answers
Do I need Level 3 to get a server tag? No. Additional Perks are independent of Boost Levels.
Do the 3 boosts count toward my level? No. Boosts spent on perks don't contribute to level progression, and level boosts can't pay for perks.
Can I set it up on my phone? No. Desktop only, for both purchasing and editing.
Can one person supply all 3 boosts? Yes. A single user can boost the same server multiple times.
What happens if I move the boosts away later? The perk is disabled and the tag is removed from every member's profile until you allocate them back.
Want to see what other servers did with their four characters first? The directory has thousands of live tags. If you're still untangling the vocabulary, server tag vs guild tag vs clan tag covers that.
